Nazko First Nation Leads Forestry Innovation with New Harvesting Training Program
Nazko First Nation is helping to shape the future of forestry in BC through its leadership in the development of an Alternate Harvesting Operator Training Program—an initiative focused on forest resiliency and long-term sustainability.
In partnership with Three Rivers Community Forest (TRCF), the University of British Columbia, and Foresight Canada, Nazko is supporting a shift away from traditional clearcutting by building a skilled workforce trained in selective harvesting methods. These methods are better aligned with biodiversity, old growth stewardship, and climate resiliency goals.
The program will combine forest science, equipment operations, simulator training, and mentorship. A pilot is expected to launch at the Alex Fraser Research Forest, with full implementation targeted for 2026.
By helping to develop this made-in-BC training model, Nazko is demonstrating what’s possible when community-driven vision, education, and innovative forest management come together.
